There is no right or wrong answer to this question, because each person has a different temperature level that is comfortable to them. However, there are some suggested guidelines that you can follow in order to save money and energy. In the summer, it is recommended that you set your thermostat no lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Similarly, you should never set your thermostat higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter.
Again, everyone has different comfort levels. To ensure that you and family remain comfortable, there are a few things you can do to accommodate both comfort and savings. Never turn your air conditioning unit off when you are not home, instead, simply increase or decrease the temperature three to four degrees based on the season (increase in the summer – decrease in the winter).
Another option is to purchase a Programmable Thermostat. The purpose of having a Programmable Thermostat is to provide savings without sacrificing comfort. They have four pre-programmed settings that you can utilize, or you can always adjust the settings to meet your family’s schedule. The overall goal is to stick with an automatic program that will decrease the run-time on your heating and cooling equipment when you don’t need to run it as much. According to Energy Star, “Homeowners can save bout $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings.” If you are considering purchasing a Programmable Thermostat, please feel free to give us a call.
